Understanding Muscles in Human Body Diagram

A human body is made up of various types of muscles and bones that help us to perform various kinds of activities. Though, bones forms the foundation of our structure, muscles are equally important because we cannot imagine of making a single move without them. There are around 640 skeletal muscles in a human body that help us walk, talk, run, stand, sit and many other small and large activities. Every muscles in a human body is bilateral which means that every muscle is a pair of two muscles on either side of the human body that does the same kind of work.

Let’s take a look at some of the important muscles in our body that helps us in various ways. If we start talking about muscles from shoulders than we first come across deltoid muscles that form the round contour around the shoulders. These muscles are also known as Deltoideus and the name comes from a Greek word Delta which means triangle. These muscles are really strong because they are involved in shoulder abduction. Just below deltoid muscles is another set of muscles called rotator cuff also known as rotor cuff which helps in stabilizing the shoulder and maintains glenohumaral joint stability. These muscles are formed from scapula and are connected at the shoulder joint. These muscles are very important to us but they are delicate as well and therefore we should be careful not to tear them while weightlifting.

biceps brachiiBiceps brachii are muscles around the biceps and they are important for rotating the forearm and to flex the elbow. These muscles are infact a bundle of muscles that share a common insertion point near the elbow joint. Just a little deeper of biceps brachii lies brachialis muscle that helps in flexing the elbow. It does work independently but it actually supports biceps brachii to flex the elbow joint. The brachialis muscle is the strongest flexor muscle of the elbow and therefore is very important muscle on our hand.

If we move down to the forearm than we should talk about pronator teres muscles that is on the forearm and helps us to rotate the forearm in such a way that palm faces posteriorly. Just near pronator teres lies brachioradialis that helps to flex the forearm at the elbow. The muscle has the capability of supination and pronation. It is very helpful for lifting something and therefore in the earlier days people used to call it The Beer Drinker Muscle.

chest muscleOn the chest section, pectoralis major is an important muscle that covers the major portion of the chest. In males it covers the entire chest section of the chest but in females this muscle lies under the breast. Abdominal external oblique is the largest muscle in the abdomen area and is made out of three flat muscles that helps in pushing the chest downwards and to create intra-abdominal pressure and also helps in flexing the entire body and rotating the vertebral column. These muscles are usually covered by subcutaneous fat and therefore they are never visible.
