The Important Facts about Nerve Pain
Our body performs a lot of functions and all these are associated with the central nervous system of the body. From muscular control to breathing to sensation; all physical mechanisms are controlled by the nervous system. There are three kinds of nerves in the human body as follows:
Automatic nerves
These are responsible for controlling the semi voluntary or the non voluntary movements of the body. Digestion, blood pressure, heart rate and temperature regulation are some of the movements controlled by the automatic nerves.
Motor Nerves
These nerves are responsible for transferring any information from the spinal cord and brain to the skin and the muscles.
Sensory Nerves
These perform the reverse function of the motor nerves, i.e. they are responsible for sending information from the muscles and the skin to the brain. These mostly are the sensations that one feels.
A pain can be caused by damage in the nerves. The damage or the discomfort can be mild but this should be taken care of and needs proper attention as this can affect the nervous system of the body. A nerve pain can disrupt life completely. The reason and the cure can only be known when one knows which nerve is damaged and its exact location. Any nerve can be damaged and the following are some symptoms related to each nerve type:
Automatic nerve damages can cause the following symptoms-
* Incapability to sense chest pain, such as angina or heart attack
* Excessive sweating (known as hyperhidrosis) or less sweating (known as anhidrosis)
* Dizziness
* Dry eyes and mouth
* Constipation
* Dysfunction of the Bladder
* Sexual dysfunction
Motor nerves damages symptoms areas follows:
* Weakness
* twitching, also known as fasciculation
* Muscle atrophy
* paralysis
Sensory nerve damage may produce the following symptoms:
* lack of sensation
* pain
* sensitivity
* burning
* tickly or itchiness
* problems with positional awareness
Different types of nerves can be damaged at one time. For example at a same time one can experience the weak points and burning in the legs.
100 different variations of nerve diseases exist and all are caused due to a particular damage and thus treatment varies.
The most awful fact is more than 20 million Americans suffer nerve problems. The nerve problems can aggravate as one ages. Diabetes is also a cause of many different nerve damages. Some diseases causing nerve damage are as follows:
Autoimmune Diseases: There are diverse types of diseases of nerves which can damage the nerves. These include: myasthenia gravis, multiple sclerosis Guillain-Barré syndrome and lupus.
Cancer: Different nerves can be damaged by cancer. There are some cancers that cause nutritional deficiencies which affect functioning of nerves.
