Nerve Damage- Main Reason for Pain

There are many movements which the body does and most of these are controlled by the nervous system of the body. All physical mechanisms of the body like muscle control, breathing regulation, feeling of hot and cold etc are done by the nervous system. There are three kinds of nerves in the body namely, Motor Nerve, Automatic nerve and sensory nerve.

  1. Motor nerve- these are the nerves which are responsible for controlling the movements and then pass the information from spinal cord and brain to the muscles
  2. Automatic Nerves- the semi voluntary and non voluntary movements of the body are controlled by these nerves like blood pressure, heart rate, temperature regulation and digestion.
  3. Sensory nerves- these  perform the reverse functions to that of the motor nerves. They carry the information from the skin and muscles to the spinal cord and brain. These are the sensations that we feel like pain.

Even if the damage to the nerve is mild it should not be ignored as the nervous system is very important to the functioning of the body. The kind of damage and the location of damage should be known as the symptoms can vary. Following can be the symptoms of a n automatic nerve damage:

  • Excessive sweating or less sweating; hyperhidrosis and anhidrosis respectively
  • Inability to realize a pain in the chest like heart attack or angina
  • Dry mouth and eyes
  • Light headedness
  • Bladder dysfunction
  • Constipation
  • Sexual dysfunction

The symptoms of a motor nerve damage can be as follows:

  • Muscle atrophy
  • Weakness
  • Fasciculation or twitching
  • Paralysis

The following are the symptoms of sensory nerve damage

  • Sensitivity
  • Pain
  • Pricking or tingling
  • Numbness
  • Problems with positional awareness
  • Burning

At one point of time there can be many nerves which are damaged. Nerve diseases can be of 100 kinds and all need different course of treatment. Thus the diagnosis of the root cause of the problem needs to be developed. One should consult a doctor so that they are advised and guided in the right manner about the cause and source of pain and also the treatment.
